The closest town with stores, restaurants and bars is Camptonville, a few minutes from the boat ramps. In scenic Tahoe National Forest at an elevation of 2,005 feet. Bullards has 55 miles of rugged shoreline with 4,700 surface acres of water. The lake holds a wide variety of fish, including, rainbow and brown trout, catfish, smallmouth and largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and kokanee salmon.

Kokanee salmon fishing during the summer is popular with locals and 'flat landers' as well. The typical rigs to fish for these land-locked salmon are either lead-core line or down rigged flashers in front of a small spinner or spoon. Some guys swear by a kernel of white corn or two on the lure. The corn appears to work but not yellow, only white corn. Trolled slowly at various depths it is possible to get the limit of five fish quickly and pursue the other things the lake has to offer.

Having lived in the area for years without a boat I often went out with friends or fished from shore when the kokanee spawn in the fall. During the spawn the fish turn from silver to red and can be caught jigging from shore in some areas.

When I did get the boat is how I found out that trolling really slow is not a rule for catching salmon. Two friends and I launched the 1957 15' aluminum boat and its relatively heavy 35 h.p. engine into the lake on a late summer morning. We rig our spinning gear with the above described flashers and bait but nobody has lead-core line or the down rigging supposedly needed to get deep enough to these fish. Slow trolling at about seventy feet is the normal for the conditions that day.

The boat needed carburetor adjustments and a small child could water-ski behind us at the slowest speed possible. We killed the crap out of those kokanee while making wide circles around other fishing boats. At times that I could react quick enough,
I had to jam it in reverse when we got a hit. Otherwise a fish lip would be all that was reeled in. I don't know who was more amazed, us or the other fishermen watching us catch fish and make a wake at the same time. Never have tried 'fast trolling' again neither can I remember catching more salmon so quickly!

Central California Lakes(Alpine-Blue Lakes)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_We60Eu3Y-9c/SDsWlZpfiLI/AAAAAAAAAyI/T1OhlkDNCQs/s320/multi+outboard+stripe.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204778626152630450" />
Central California

Alpine Lake
Alpine Lake is located Approximately 55 miles southeast of Angels Camp at an elevation of 7,230 feet in the pristine Stanislaus National Forest. Founded by Ole Evinrude, it was formerly owned by the Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC), and is now owned by Bombardier Recreational Products.
Evinrude outboards use primarily two stroke engines in their larger models (40 horsepower and above), and four stroke engines in most of their smaller models.
Evinrude outboards used carburetors until the late 1990s, when FICHT, a fuel injection technology, was introducted.
After Bombardier acquired the Evinrude and Johnson Outboards brands, FICHT technology was replaced by E-TEC direct fuel injection. This improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, oil usage, noise levels, and maintenance needs. Evinrude E-TEC was the first outboard engine technology to win the American Environmental Protection Agency 2005 Clean Air Excellence Award which recognizes low emission levels. It is also recognized as acceptable for use by the European Union.
Evinrude the dragonfly, a character from Disney's The Rescuers, was likely inspired by this company--the dragonfly mans a leaf as a sort of airboat in several scenes.
Outboard motor review Mercury

All about Mercury Marine

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_We60Eu3Y-9c/SDsWlZpfiLI/AAAAAAAAAyI/T1OhlkDNCQs/s320/multi+outboard+stripe.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204778626152630450" />
Mercury Marine outboard motors
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Company beginnings
The company began when engineer Carl Kiekhaefer purchased a small outboard motor company in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Kiekhaefer's original intention for the Kiekhaefer Corporation was to make magnetic separators for the dairy industry. The purchase included 300 defective outboard motors. Kiekhaefer and a small staff of employees rebuilt the motors and sold them to a mail-order company. The motors were so sound that the buyer purchased more. Kiekhaefer designed motors that withstood the elements better than his competition, and called the motor Mercury after the fleet-footed Roman god. Kiekhaefer took 16,000 orders at the 1940 New York Boat Show.
World War II
World War II changed the corporate climate, and Kiekhaefer sought a government contract to design two-man air-cooled chainsaws. Army engineers were unable to design a lightweight motor. Kiekhaefer designed a new lightweight chainsaw in 2 months. The Kiekhaefer powered chainsaw was able to cut through a 24-inch (610 mm) green log in 17 seconds, while it took the nearest competitor 52 seconds. Mercury was awarded the contract, and was the world's largest chainsaw manufacturer by the end of the war.
Post-war history
Mercury foresaw Americans interest in boating would increase after the war. Kiekhaefer introduced a 19.8 cubic inch, 10 horsepower (hp), two-cylinder alternate firing design motor at the 1947 New York Boat Show called the "Lightning" or KE-7.
NASCAR racing
Main article: Carl Kiekhaefer
Kiekhaefer decided to promote his company by owning a NASCAR and AAA team. The team dominated NASCAR Grand National (now Busch Series) (at one point winning 16 straight races), even though it only competed in 1955 and 1956. The team won the 1955 and 1956 NASCAR championships with drivers Tim Flock and Buck Baker. One of Mercury's innovations was using dry paper air filters, which are still standard in automobiles today.
1950s through 1970sIn 1957 Kiekhaefer started testing at a Florida lake he called "Lake X" in order to keep the location secret. Later that year the company designed a new 60 hp (45 kW) motor named "Mark 75." Two Mark 75 motors set an endurace record by running non-stop for over 50,000 miles (80,000 km) over 68 3/4 days on Lake X. The motors were refueled as they ran, and averaged 30.3 miles per hour.
In 1961 the company merged with the Brunswick Corporation.
The company introduced the MerCruiser motor at the 1961 Chicago Boat Show. The motor would later take over 80 percent of the world market.

Carl Kiekhaefer resigned as President of Kiekhaefer Mercury in 1969, and the name was changed to Mercury Marine. During this time, Mercury produced snowmobiles, like many other companies in the late 60's. The first ones incorporatd a 250 cc two man chainsaw engine. In 1971, they came out with the Rocket, and Lightning models. These sleds combined aluminum tunnels with Canadian Curtiss Wright (CCW) engines. The Rocket was a 340, and the Lightning a 400 with electric start. By 1972, Mercury started production of the Hurricane, a lightning fast sled with slide suspension (as opposed to bogie wheel). This started off a new era in snowmobile construction for the whole industry and the sled's basic format set up what we see today in modern snowmobiles. Mercury was renowned in the 1970s as one of the best racing and performance snowmobile manufacturers, as well as an industry leader in marine engine production.
All about Outboard Motors

All about Outboard motors

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_We60Eu3Y-9c/SDsWlZpfiLI/AAAAAAAAAyI/T1OhlkDNCQs/s320/multi+outboard+stripe.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204778626152630450" />
Outboard motor
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
General uses
Outboard motors for a boat are developed as a self-contained unit with engine, subsidiary systems, and propeller, designed to be mounted at the stern (rear) of the craft. They are the most common motorized method of propelling small watercraft.

As well as providing propulsion, outboards provide steering control, as they are designed to pivot over their mountings and thus control the orientation of the propeller. The transmission leg in the water also acts as a rudder even when the propeller is not providing power.

When boats are out of service or being drawn through shallow waters, outboard motors can also be tipped forward trimmed up over their mounts to elevate the propeller and transmission shaft out of the water to avoid accumulation of seaweed or hitting underwater hazards such as rocks.

Types of motors
Small outboard motors are truly self-contained, with integral fuel tanks and controls mounted on the body of the motor and steered by a "tiller" directly connected to the motor. Such small motors can weigh as little as 12 kilograms (approximately 26 pounds) and provide sufficient power to move a small dinghy at around 15 km/h (9 mph), far faster than possible with oars. They are highly portable, able to be removed by simply loosening their mounting clamps. Small outboards usually use a manual pull start ignition system while larger models often have electric start similar to a car.

Manufacturers have produced large outboard designs, with sufficient power to be used on boats as long as 9 metres (30 feet) or more. Manufacturers also produce electric outboards, commonly referred to as "trolling motors", which are used on very small craft or on small lakes where gasoline motors are prohibited, as a secondary means of propulsion on larger craft, and as repositioning thrusters while fishing for bass and other freshwater species in the US, where their quietness and zero emissions outweigh the range deficiencies shared with electric cars. Diesel outboards are also available, but their weight and cost make them impractical for most purposes.

Pump-jet propulsion (replacing the conventional propeller) is available as an option on most outboard motors. Like other types of pump-jet propulsion systems, they offer virtually no cavitation, giving the boat more maneuverability and the ability to operate in very shallow water. However, the low efficiency compared to propellers has seen them restricted to specialized applications.

History and developments
The first practical outboard motor was created by Norwegian-American inventor Ole Evinrude in 1909.
Historically, most outboards have used two-stroke engines fitted with a carburetor due to their simplicity (and consequent reliability), low cost, and high power-to-weight ratios - weight issues being particularly important as too much weight over the stern of boats tends to impede their handling. However, the high specific fuel consumption and high emissions associated with traditional carburated two-stroke engines has led to the development of more sophisticated engines. Most manufacturers have marketed four-stroke engines, often with computer controls, fuel injection, variable camshaft timing, multiple valves per cylinder, and supercharging. Others have focused on developing computer controlled direct-injected two stroke engines. Either of these designs can reduce fuel consumption and emissions markedly, especially at low engine speeds, albeit at the expense of greater cost and complexity.

Marine engines also benefit from the ability to draw an unlimited supply of cooling water from the environment; this eliminates the need for radiators and cooling fans, lowering complexity and weight.

Yamaha has a long racing heritage where it has had its machines and team win many different competitions in many different areas, for example both road and off road racing, also Yamaha has had great success with riders such as Bob Hannah, Heikki Mikkola, Kenny Roberts, Chad Reed, Stefan Merriman, Wayne Rainey, and the latest, Valentino Rossi. Yamaha is known to those who are older in age as the designer of the modern motocross bike, as they were the first to build a production mono-shock motocross bike (1975 for 250 and 400, 1976 for 125) and one of the first to have a water-cooled motocross production bike (1981, but 1977 in works bikes).

Since 1962 ,Yamaha produced production road racing grand prix motorcycles that any licensed road racer could purchase. In 1970, Non-factory "privateer" teams dominated the 250cc World Championship with Great Britain’s Rodney Gould winning the title on a Yamaha TD2.

Motorcycle models
Yamaha has made an extensive number of two- and four-stroke scooters, on-road and off-road motorcycles. The Yamaha XS 650, introduced in 1970, was such an overwhelming success that it crippled the British monopoly of vertical twin motorcycles.

MotorcyclesYamaha Alba
Yamaha Frog
Yamaha Libero
Yamaha Gladiator
Yamaha Mest
Yamaha Eccy
Yamaha Passol
Yamaha EC-02
Yamaha Passol-L
Yamaha Yz85

Mopeds
Yamaha PAS (Nickel metal hydride battery)
PAS Lithium (Lithium ion battery)
PAS Business (Ni-Cd battery)
Yamaha YQ50 Aerox R
Yamaha Jog
Yamaha Jog R
Yamaha Neo's
Yamaha BW'S
Yamaha FS1 (Yamaha FS1E)
Yamaha Lagend
Yamaha DT50
Yamaha TZR
Yamaha QT50

Golf carts
Yamaha G1
Yamaha Drive

Personal Watercraft
WaveRunner

Wheelchairs
JW Active
JW-IB
Nesquick sponsored Race chair

Wheelchair upgrade partsJWX-1
JW-II
JW-I
Wetard chair 85

All-Terrain Vehicles
BW80 / 200 / 350
YFZ450
Raptor 80 / 350 / 660 / 700
Blaster 200
Banshee 350
Warrior 350
Bruin 350
Kodiak 400 / 450
Grizzly 80 / 125 / 350 / 400 / 450 / 600 / 660 / 700
Big Bear 400
Wolverine 350 / 450
Tri-Z 250

SnowmobilesYamaha has recently claimed a 100% four-stroke snowmobile line-up, making them the only snowmobile manufacturer to do so. In Canada though, there are still three models that Yamaha manufactures that are still 2 stroke. They are the Bravo, VK 540 and the Venture XL. Yamaha had introduced four-strokes to their line-up in 2003 and the line-up became four-stroke based for model year 2005. Many say that Yamaha has proven snowmobiles can be clean, efficient, and reliable all while maintaining strong performance. The RX-1 released in 2003 was the first performance-oriented four-stroke snowmobile to ever hit the market. It was not, however, the first modern four-stroke snowmobile produced. That honor belongs to Arctic Cat for their Yellowstone Special, released in 2000, which was designed as a rental sled that could meet Yellowstone National Park's stringent emission requirement. However, the Yamaha received much criticism for its weight disadvantage when compared to similar two-strokes, despite its excellent fuel economy and low-range torque. Yamaha is now on the cutting edge of four-stroke technology with the introducing of their 80FI engine which is equipped on the Phazer and Venture Lite models. This engine has one of the highest specific output of any four-stroke in production, with 160 HP/L, Yamaha achieves this even without the use of a forced induction system. Yamaha is also a key player in the "four-stroke wars", which are a series of advertisements from opponent Ski-Doo who claim their 2-tec and power-tek equipped two-strokes are still cleaner and more efficient than four-strokes, while Yamaha still claims the four-strokes are cleaner. Yamaha also broke a multi-year absence from sno-cross in the winter of 2006-07 with their introduction of a factory race team headed by former Arctic Cat racer Robbie Malinoski.

Current line-upBravo
Apex
Attack
Nytro
FX Nytro
Phazer (4th Generation)
RS Rage
RS Vector
RS Venture
VK Professional

Significant previously produced models
Bravo
coRy
Enticer
Exciter
Phazer (1st-3rd Generations)
Mountain Max
RX-1
SnoScoot
Sno Sport
SRV 540
Brand loyalty

About YAMAHA

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_We60Eu3Y-9c/SDoVQ5pfiHI/AAAAAAAAAxk/p7v18Pa4--4/s320/multi+outboard+stripe.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204495699476973682" />
Yamaha Motor Company
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.
Type Public
Founded July 1, 1955
Headquarters Iwata, Shizuoka, Japan
Revenue 12 billion US$ (2005)
Operating income 900 million US$ (2005)
Net income 550 million US$ (2005)
Employees 39,300 (2005)
Website Yamaha Motor Global
Yamaha Motor Company Limited (ヤマハ発動機株式会社, Yamaha Hatsudōki Kabushiki-gaisha?) After expanding Yamaha Corporation into the world's biggest piano maker, then Yamaha CEO Genichi Kawakami took Yamaha into the field of motorized vehicles on July 1, 1955. The company's intensive research into metal alloys for use in acoustic pianos had given Yamaha wide knowledge of the making of lightweight, yet sturdy and reliable metal constructions. For the sake of safety, I had already gusseted the transom with ½”plywood instead of ¼” as the plans called for, and I put extra oak framing there also. I mixed copper in the epoxy of the bottom with a layer of 6-ounce cloth and instead of wood rub strips, I put full dimensional 1”X2” on edge UHMW. The boat was not yet finished, but it had been glassed fully with 1” seam tape and a layer of 6-ounce cloth everywhere and 4” taped seams on the outside. It has 5.2 mm luan plywood with red oak framing and motor mount. It has ½” fir plywood gussets and they will be covered with 3 mm luan for a matching finish. I will place the mast as per the plan, but I will make a rudder that fits over the motor mount with nylon webbing for rudder attachment.

You wanted to hear about the motor and not the boat. After a little fooling around with starting and stopping the motor, I picked up my wife and dog. We cruised out to Modoc Point near where I live. I live on the shores of Upper Klamath Lake. The lake is thirty-eight miles long and varies in width from five to about twenty-five miles wide. It is a great test bench for any boat I could ever build. This Briggs & Stratton engine was eating up the lake like nobody’s business. At full throttle I could cruise at about 12 miles per hour with my wife Nan, dog Spuds and myself. I varied the throttle to break in the new motor and my wife was caught off guard a few times by the deceleration. We had a grand time out on the lake. The motor at full speed vibrates like any other one cylinder engine. Backing off the throttle limit’s the vibration, but you lose the top speed.

The motor runs like a champ and starts the first time every time no matter what the temperature. It is snowing now, and duck and goose season is in full swing. I do not have the constitution to go boating in this type of weather since the ducks and geese aren’t even flying in the stuff. This motor is not a Honda, but then it isn’t priced like a Honda. The motors that are being sold now are for fresh water. They are air-cooled and quiet, something that two cycle motors are not.

I have given this motor a lot of testing, and I feel the only thing that could improve it is a complete remote steering and gearshift control. I feel it is not rated in a correct manner. I live at an elevation of 4,500 feet. A normal 5 hp engine should lose about 12 percent of its power at this elevation. In no way should that motor make the P.C. Bolger Brick plane with my twenty-seven acre body. I have always weighed over 200lbs, but now from my back injury I weigh 280 lbs. The Boat weighs 75 lbs and the motor weighs 53 lbs without the three gallons of fuel. I forgot to mention that you could cruise all day on a gallon of fuel with this Briggs & Stratton. I have been forbidden to disclose under penalty of death what Nan weighs. My Pomeranian must weigh 155 lbs soaking wet, though!

With price cuts this time of year at most marine outlets, you could save a thousand dollars over the price of a Honda outboard with the Briggs & Stratton outboard. I wholeheartedly endorse this outboard to the readers of this magazine. It is about time that America builds a quality outboard at a price that all of its boaters can afford. With its three-blade propeller, solid gearbox, and above average power, I know it is a great deal. When I spoke with Briggs & Stratton they told me that a saltwater version is in the works, but would not give me a deadline. As a pusher motor for a sailboat, this outboard is perfect. It does have a short shaft, and I don’t know if a long shaft version will ever happen. With a lowering motor mount, it would work fine as an auxiliary for any boat under twenty-five feet or even larger.

Now let’s get our gear ready for winter and remember to drain your lower end on any inboard/outboard or outboard motors you have. I hope this will convince any of your significant others to place one of these under your Christmas tree (hint, hint). Everyone deserves an outboard like this.

From John’s floating tool crib to your boat-yard,

John Cupp

Outboard Motor Review:Briggs & Stratton

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_We60Eu3Y-9c/SDoVQ5pfiHI/AAAAAAAAAxk/p7v18Pa4--4/s320/multi+outboard+stripe.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204495699476973682" />
Briggs & Stratton Outboard Motor Review: Let me explain it is mostly aluminum! The premiere small engine manufacturer of America and the world, Briggs & Stratton has made a brilliant move building a 5 hp four-cycle outboard motor. No, it isn’t the same engine as on your lawn mower. It is a brand new design strictly for marine use.

A long anticipated motor from a USA citizen’s perspective. I was weaned on small Briggs & Stratton motors for go-carts, mini bikes, and yes, the faithful lawn mower. I learned the sound that they would make when you milled the head down to raise the compression. I also know the sound of a head gasket leak when that same over-milled head would blow the gasket out the side. Then you had to find solid metal gaskets made from copper so the engine would run for longer than ten minutes. I always wanted to mount one of these lawn mower engines to a boat, but other projects took precedence, and I never got my wish. This is why I was so excited when I called Briggs & Stratton and spoke with them about getting a motor for testing.

I was surprised when it arrived in one box. I didn’t think that the fuel tank and motor could fit together in the same box, but they did. It was a compact shipping crate and the motor with a 3-gallon tank were well protected from the rigors of shipping. My wife about fell over when she saw the box and immediately demanded that I take it out of the living room where I had put it before taking it out of the box. I explained to her that it would not get the house smelling because it didn’t have any gasoline or oil in it. She informed me that she would throw a tablecloth over the whole thing if it stayed there a minute more than it should. It seemed small at first but it was a rather large box!

What a shock when I opened the box and found a camouflaged motor! I think the rep thought it was a hunting magazine when I mentioned Duckworks Magazine and MAIB. Camouflage is the brand new option for the motor and it looks great. When I go to a messabout, I’ll just put bushes on my boat and sneak up on group.

What a nice finish this motor has, and everything looks in its place. The throttle grip has just enough tension to not accelerate but make it very easy for turning. Briggs & Stratton provides everything you need except the gasoline, and even then they give you additive so your gas won’t go bad and cause varnish in the carburetor. This motor is far from a lawn mower just in its ignition system. It has full electronic ignition and a speed governor. The motor will never go above its four thousand RPM red line. I put gasoline in the tank, hooked on the hose and put oil in the crankcase. It was the moment of truth when I switched the line open on the petcock and pressed the gas line bulb a few times. Choke and VROOM! Take off the choke, and it fired up perfectly so I shut it down.

With the help from my wife and the lawn tractor we managed to get the copper P.C. Bolger Brick and Briggs & Stratton outboard motor to the shore across the road from my house. I put the PFD’s in the boat and paddled out where I thought there were no rocks and started the motor. Every time I pulled the starter cord the engine would fire up. I then eased the outboard into reverse and backed up. So far so good. I slipped the very crisp gearshift into neutra,l then forward, and off I went. It actually scared me when I gave it a little gas.
part 2 Briggs review

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://yamahaoutboardmotors.blogspot.com/2008/05/outboard-motor-reviewbriggs-stratton.html' title='Outboard Motor Review:Briggs & Introduction: For months anglers and boaters have held their breath in anticipation of the unveiling of Mercury’s much hyped “Project X.” Mercury promised to shake up the industry with the introduction of this new powerplant, and two days ago at the Miami International Boat Show the veil of secrecy was lifted and the propulsion system known up to this time as “X” finally had a name….Verado.
Impressions: The holy grail of marine motors would deliver extreme power, refinement, low noise, excellent fuel economy, reliability, and all the while making sure to meet all of the increasingly strict emissions specifications in all states. Mercury stepped up to the challenge and five years ago begun development of the new system. The project took over 100 million dollars since conception to today’s realization, and countless hours on the side of Mercury Marine engineers.
The main engine is based on a 2.6 liter double overhead cam platform, and features 24-valves. Mercury chose to use an inline-six configuration for better balance and reduced vibration and noise. This is part of the reason why the Verado has such a unique profile. Patrick Mackey, President of Mercury, confirmed that the Verado's engine was designed and built internally, and does not make use of another outboard manufacturer's product, or any other existing Mercury engines.
The Mercury engineers didn't just set out to build a next generation marine engine, they decided to pioneer a new propulsion system. "Verado" is not just the outboard engine, but an entirely integrated system that includes electro-hydraulic steering, as well as a digital throttle and shift system dubbed "SmartCraft." SmartCraft Digital Throttle & Shift uses a data cable link between the control system and the engine. This gives the driver instantaneous throttle control at every rpm level, such precise control has never before been offered on any other outboard system.
The Mission: There is no doubt that 4-stroke engines are among the most fuel efficient and reliable engines available today, but lack the torque that 2-stroke engines are able to deliver. Mercury set out to build an engine that not only delivers unprecedented torque and power capable of beating any comparably sized 4-stroke engine, they sought to match any other 4-stroke in emissions, noise, and economy, as well as take on just about any 2-stroke engine in raw performance. Basically a marine engine with "no compromises."
Power and Precision: The Verado family of motors will launch in 200, 225, 250. and 275HP configurations, and is premeditated to deliver incredible torque with a smaller displacement, making it the most powerful four stroke engine on the market. How do they plan to do it? The answer is by being the first production outboard to embed a supercharger into the motor! Mercury co-worked with IHI Turbo America to build the supercharger system which effectively forces a higher air volume into the combustion chamber, which results in more throttle response. The centrifugal supercharger is cooled via an active air intercooler that is designed to inject boost air that is the exact same temperature as pure intake air. In the engine itself, each piston is also individually cooled for optimal performance.
Speed & Control: The weight for each engine, including the entire steering system and mounting bracket tops out at 630lbs. According to Mercury this is the lightest complete system in its class. By using digital controls versus traditional mechanics Mercury should be able to shave off a few pounds, but were not sure if it is enough to put the Verado's complete package weight below the competition. Outboard by itself the Verado definitely weighs more than current motors. Whether or not the addition of 50-80lbs translates into more power will ultimately depend on actual field tests. Initial tests of the Verado seem to reveal an extremely solid powerband, with torque comparable to even larger 2-stroke engines.

The SmartCraft drive system is completely managed by computer, and this electronic drive system eliminates cables and junctions and presents instant throttle response. The digital control allows boaters a much greater freedom when it comes to various configurations of gauges and information. In addition since the controls and readouts are all communicated to via electronics it would be easy to set up a second set of controls, useful on larger boats, especially those with dual towers.

Northern Ca Guided Fishing Trips

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_We60Eu3Y-9c/SKZmWUG3JFI/AAAAAAAAA_s/kcUQ9SfaYcA/s200/salmon+man.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5234984150405424210" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_We60Eu3Y-9c/SKZl-mItx0I/AAAAAAAAA_k/1YqHvcqlbCY/s200/catfish+girl.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5234983742928176962" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_We60Eu3Y-9c/SDnUB5pfh8I/AAAAAAAAAwE/L5Th9DfiTaU/s320/fishing+007.jpg" border="0" alt="california guided fishing trips"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204423973523130306" />

Welcome,
If you are interested in fishing Northern California you have came to the right place!
Residents of Northern California for over thirty years we can provide you with all the information you need to plan a fishing and or camping trip in the north state.
You will find the weather and fishing to be great. This does not apply to everyone since not everyone has the same needs and applications for these motors. Some motors provide features and benefits better than others but in a comparison of all motors each have their subtle differentiation. In order to alleviate a homogenous market, brands have utilize a small degree of product differentiation. The functionality and mechanics of different brands all have one thing in common....performance.
Here are a few scenarios that we feel make sense to choose one brand over the other:
You want a motor that gives you the option of changing shaft length by adding or subtracting a component.
In this scenario you may consider a Johnson or Evinrude (others convert as well) outboard since the 4-15hp outboard motors have extension kits.
You have to have an outboard motor that has a gear shifter integrated into the tiller.
In this scenario you may consider a Mercury or Mariner outboard since they are the only brand that has the shifter built right into the twist tiller.
You want a sailboat motor that weighs under 60lbs but has the power of a 10hp.
In this scenario you may consider a Nissan or Tohatsu because they have one of the best sailboat 2-strokes the 9.8 hp
You are not concerned with weight and you want to have the most powerful motor for the horsepower rating
In this scenario you may consider a Suzuki since we have found them to be the most powerful motors for their rating. (Based on our tests. We make no statements claiming that Suzuki's will beat any other motor)
You want to find the right outboard for you by researching the features that each brand offers. It is foolish to exclude brands because of what you heard, you should do it based on concrete facts such as features.
Reputed "Off Brands"
This is probably the most important section of this article. THERE ARE VERY FEW IF ANY OFF BRAND OR GENERIC OUTBOARD MOTOR PRODUCERS IN THE USA TODAY. As of now there are only a handful of outboard motors that can be considered generic. Since the EPA has mandated emission regulations on outboard motors most of these companies have decided to get out of the motor business.
We do not regard Tohatsu, Nissan, Suzuki, Gamefisher, Mariner, Force or Chrysler as "off brands". Each of these brands have produced some of the best running outboard motors. Just because you do not see dealerships on every street corner does not mean that these motors are not quality products. In fact, we have found that Tohatsu/Nissan and Suzuki to have excellent engineering and innovative technology. We find that almost every used Nissan, Tohatsu, and Suzuki that we come across, regardless of appearance, have been strong runners. Many lodges and resorts world wide love these motors because of their durability and pricing. As far as Gamefisher, Chrysler and Force go these are great motors as well. They are economy motors that are targeted for a price conscious consumer. This does not mean that they have a shorter life span this basically means that they are less refined and may have less features(such as F-N-R clutch) than high priced motors. You should never disregard these motors as an purchase option just because of perceived notions.
Summary:
We at AFA Marine feel very confident that all manufacturers today and of years past have all been pretty consistent in putting out a great product. Outboard motors are some of the most sophisticated engineering that man has ever created. The thought and intuition that went into creating and designing outboard motors is very fascinating. In order to produce an engine that functions as a propulsion device for a water craft it must be able to handle the elements. Almost all engines that were created have been able to handle the test of time, stress, usage, and abuse. With this in regard there are a few brands that decided to take an economical marketing approach which meant using cheaper materials. For the most part, you can count on almost any brand or outboard motor to function well if taken care of.
AFA Marine
Briggs review

AFA Marines article on brand loyalty.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_We60Eu3Y-9c/SDnPqppfh4I/AAAAAAAAAvk/eMgkNqVng_g/s320/icon-yamaha.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5204419176044660610" />
For many people the decision to purchase an outboard engine is based on brand loyalty or past experience with a particular brand. For others it is from what they have heard by word of mouth, forum talk, or some opinionated article they have read. The question posed is "does it really matter which brand you go with? Is there one brand better than the other?"

The answer YES and NO.

First we will explain the "No" part: ( Is there one brand better than the other?)
So you have heard bad things about Mercury and only good things about Johnson OMC? People have told you that Chrysler engines were junk and Yamaha motors are the only motors that hold up in saltwater? You are too scared to purchase a Tohatsu or Nissan because you are not familiar with the engine? All of these propositions are typical opinions and sentiments that individual boaters have preached. None of these are concrete facts that all boaters can agree on. Lets check out the most common scenarios related to brand loyalty that we at AFA Marine come across:
If you ask a dealer from each brand they will all tell you that their motors are the best and that everyone else's outboards are junk.

The reason is obvious, they probably want to make a sale for their brand.
If you ask someone who grew up using a particular brand and has had success with that brand they be partial to that motor and put down other makes.
Well how can they knock other brands if they have never tried them? It is no different then someone who has had success on a particular fishing lure only but has never tried the competitor's lure. They could have the same or better results without ever noticing it.
You have owned a particular brand and it blew up on you or you had problems. You then curse that brand because of your one experience.
Often this happens with poorly maintained used motors. You have to attribute most of the problems you will have to the usage or abuse that the previous owner(s) may have initiated.
You read an article from a brand that states their motor is far above any other brand.
These are fundamental objectives marketers for these brands want to achieve. Funny thing is that some competing brands actually subcontract their motors to their competitors then battle it out in the advertising world.
You have only seen the particular boat you are buying have one brand installed on it.
This is most often a result of a particular dealer getting a better deal from the brand to equip these engines on their boat. Usually means that the particular brand will allow them to make bigger margins...more or less a business deal rather than brand reputation.
Your mechanic or boat repair shop usually has one particular brand in for repair more often than some others?
This is probably a result of their being more of that brand sold in that regional area than others. For example: here in Clearwater FL, there are more Yamaha and Mercury motors than Johnson or Evinrudes. Therefore odds are higher that you will see a Mercury or Yamaha being repaired in a shop.
In all honesty we don't really see any outboard motor brand has having serious flaws or should be shunned when making a purchasing decision. We often get phone calls from people who swear that they will never touch a Mercury(example) followed by a phone call from a client that will only trust Mercury. We get customers who are reluctant to purchase a Tohatsu thinking that they are a lower end motor when in actuality they are one of the best motors we have ever tested. Some people even go as far as to claim that they will never buy an Evinrude but will be happy to own a Johnson.
